The Walking Iris, scientifically known as Neomarica gracilis, is a charming and easily recognizable perennial plant belonging to the Iris family (Iridaceae). The name “Walking Iris” is derived from its unique method of propagation, where new plantlets form at the end of the long, arched flowering stalks (scapes), causing the plant to “walk” or spread across the ground as the stalks bend and touch down. A “pack of 2 plants” provides an excellent start for establishing a beautiful clump.

Key Characteristics

  • Foliage: The plant features long, stiff, sword-shaped (ensiform), deep green leaves that grow in a fan arrangement, similar to a traditional Iris. These leaves provide a strong, year-round, architectural, tropical-like presence.

  • Flowers: The blooms are beautiful, but fleeting. They appear on the edge of the leaf-like flowering stalks and are typically white or pale blue with striking markings of brown, yellow, and blue-purple near the center. They often only last for a single day, hence another common name, the “Apostle Plant” (referring to the belief that the plant will not flower until it has developed 12 leaves).

  • Propagation: The plant’s “walking” habit makes it incredibly easy to propagate. Once a flower fades, a small plantlet forms at the tip of the stalk. As the stalk bends to the ground, the plantlet roots, effectively moving the plant to a new location.

  • Growth: It has a clumping habit and is a robust, relatively low-maintenance plant.

Optimal Care

The Neomarica gracilis is a resilient and adaptable plant, suitable for both indoor containers and outdoor shaded gardens in warmer climates:

Care Aspect Requirement Notes
Light Partial Shade to Bright Indirect Light Thrives in dappled or filtered light. It can tolerate full sun but may result in sun-scorched leaves. It also grows well indoors near a bright window.
Watering Moderate & Consistent Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during the active growing and flowering season. It dislikes being completely dried out.
Soil Well-Draining, Rich Soil Prefers fertile, organic-rich soil. A standard good-quality potting mix works well in containers.
Temperature Warm (Frost-Free) It is not frost-hardy and must be protected from freezing temperatures. It is best grown outdoors in USDA Zones 9–11.
Pots (for 2 plants) Shallow and Wide Since they spread via runners, planting both plants in a wide container will give them space to “walk” and clump into a fuller display.

  • Live plant along with a plastic pot.
  • Plant height will be 08-12 inches in 6 inches pot.
  • Plant height will be 24-28 inches in 8 inches pot.
  • Plants nature is outdoor/semi shade, less watering.
  • Assured Safe Delivery With Easy Replacement
